The inspiration

Down near Main Break, the Margaret River mouth is a spot for waves, hanging out and catching up with familiar faces. Full of life, laughs and community, it’s the stomping ground of local groms who call themselves the River Dogs.

Plenty of our own crew grew up as River Dogs. They might not be groms anymore, but that River Dog way of life is still in them. This beer is a nod to them, the generations coming through and the patch of coast they call home.

"This is a nice one to have when ... nah f*ck it, I don't know when it's nice to have. I have it all the time."
— Head Brewer, Ryan Allen

The brewing process + Tasting Notes

It's a modern take on a new school IPA, pretty light on the crystal malts and using a whole array of different hop products and varieties. We've got some New Zealand hops in there, we've got Cryo American hops,

River Dog is our take on a South West Coast IPA. Packed with sticky pine resin, sweet stone fruit, papaya and grapefruit, it brings plenty of hop character over a light malt base. Smooth and clean, with balanced bitterness and a crisp finish — a little taste of our patch of coast.

In River Dog, bold pine and sticky resin meet grapefruit, stone fruit and papaya. A pale malt base gives the hops room to shine, with balanced bitterness and a smooth, clean finish.

What's a South West Coast IPA?

Our take on a West Coast IPA. West Coast roots. South West character.

A classic West Coast IPA is a hop-forward beer with firm bitterness and a dry, clean finish. It’s known for pine, resin and citrus flavours, with the hops doing most of the talking.

You generally find:

  • Aroma + flavour: grapefruit, citrus peel, pine and resin.
  • Bitterness: pronounced and lingering, with a sharp, refreshing edge
  • Appearance: generally pretty clear, ranging from gold ---> amber
  • Malt: enough backbone to support the hops. Older examples can have some caramel flavour, modern versions usually have a leaner, pale base.
  • Mouthfeel: clean, less of the softy, pillowy texture that's associated with hazys.

South West Coast IPA is our name for an IPA that takes its cues from the West Coast style and finds its home here in Margaret River.
Named for our patch of coast, brewed our way.
